Demolition of the Multi-Storey Car Park, Kilmarnock
The demolition of the multi-storey car park in Kilmarnock is due to start on Monday 9 September, with work programmed to last for 30 weeks.
During this period, James Shaw Lane to Foregate Square will temporarily close to traffic and taxis, however, pedestrian access to the bus station, Burns Mall and the shops at The Foregate will not be affected. Foregate North car park will operate as normal and the taxi rank currently situated in James Shaw Lane will move temporarily to Portland Street.
The decision to demolish the car park was based predominantly on health and safety recommendations, taking into account the deterioration of the building, the low occupancy levels and the considerable costs that would have been required to restore it to an acceptable and safe standard.
To remedy the loss of spaces within the multi-storey, new car parks have been constructed at London Road and Sturrock Street, with another at Grange Street due to start construction soon.
Various potential alternative uses for this space are currently being considered and we are in ongoing discussions with our communities to work out the best options for the site.
Temporary taxi rank information
From Monday 9 September 2024 the taxi rank adjacent to the Multi-Storey Car Park, Kilmarnock will temporarily relocate from James Shaw Lane to Portland Street. The taxi rank runs from the end of East George Street Car Park to The Standing Man Pub.
An overspill taxi rank is also available on Strand Street.

Delivery information
Delivery vehicles will still have access to Portland Street before 10.30am and after 4.30pm as normal, however there are no additional provisions in place due to the width of the pedestrianised area.
Car park information
The Multi-Storey Car Park demolition works will not impact access to car parks around the area.
The nearest car parks to Foregate Square are:
East George Street,
Foregate South,
Foregate North.
On Street car parking is also available on Strand Street and the surrounding area.
Blue badge parking information
James Shaw Lane and Foregate Square will be closed off to traffic during the demolition works.
We ask that blue badge holders make use of facilities in East George Street Car Park, Strand Street or any other available Pay and Display parking bay.
Pedestrian access
Pedestrian access to Foregate Square and local shops and businesses will be maintained throughout the demolition works.
