South Ayrshire Parking Scheme (2 hours free)

Frequently asked questions

How do i claim my 2 free hours?

New ticket-less machines have been installed within Ayr, known as Pay by Plate parking machines.

Two hours free on-street parking has been introduced in Ayr Town Centre. The changes mean that anyone can enjoy one free stay of up to two hours each day and pay absolutely nothing.

The free parking applies to the following streets, but does not include car parks:

Alloway Street,

Barns Street,

Boswell Park,

Burns Statue Square,

Cathcart Street,

Charlotte Street,

Citadel Place,

Dalblair Road,

Douglas Street,

Fort Street,

Fullarton Street,

George Street,

Kyle Street,

Mill Street,

Mill Wynd,

New Bridge Street,

Parkhouse Street,

River Terrace,

Sandgate,

Smith Street,

South Harbour Street,

Wellington Square.

When you arrive at the on-street Pay By Plate machines, you must register your vehicle using the on-screen instructions, then you can use the bay for free for up to two hours.

When you return, remove your vehicle, and do not return to that location within one hour, this ensures there is a good turnover of spaces.

When should i purchase a session?

Once you have parked for free, you can return to your vehicle and move to another Pay by Plate location and also park there for free, as long as you are still within your two hours.

If you do move your vehicle to a different Pay By Plate street on the same day, after your two hours has expired, you will need to purchase a session at the Pay by Plate machine.

How do i avoid a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN)?

It is the responsibility of the motorist when parking in any restricted parking area, to satisfy the conditions of parking prior to leaving the vehicle for the duration of a stay.

The motorist must take note of all available signage as well as the information and instruction of the Pay by Plate machine screen.

Should the Pay by Plate machine not function for example, the screen is blank or an on screen message reads “use another machine,” please use any other on street Pay by Plate machine to register the parking session.

The following details must be correct at the point of inspection, as prompted by the Pay by Plate machine screen:

  • The correct vehicle registration must be entered and confirmed, as prompted by the Pay by Plate machine. You must ensure that you use the correct keypad which distinguishes between numbers and letter.

Take care to avoid the number “zero” when the letter “O” is required. When the motorist reviews the Vehicle Registration Mark (VRM) as prompted by the Pay by Plate machine and finds they have made a mistake in entering the VRM,  cancel the session by pressing the red button and restart the process as per the instructions on the Pay by Plate machine.

As the Pay by Plate machine allows the customer to amend an error to a VRM prior to confirming the parking session, an appeal based on incorrect input of a vehicle registration details will not be accepted.

  • The parking session must be confirmed as prompted by the Pay by Plate machine, where an on screen message stating “Your parking session has started,” will be displayed.

Should the parking session not be confirmed as per the instructions of the Pay By plate machine, the Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) will not be cancelled.

Prior to leaving the vehicle, the motorist must complete the steps above. Should the vehicle be observed with no valid Parking Session the PCN will not be cancelled.
