Balancing act at bike event
Tue, 21 Feb 2017
Kay Park’s off-road track was packed with young cyclists recently when balanceability taster sessions helped little ones get on their balance bike.
The 45 minute taster sessions were organised by Kilmarnock’s Active Travel Hub and delivered by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance’s Road Safety Team.
20 children, all under 6 years old, were given training in how to use pedal-less, balance bikes. They were shown how to pick up, mount and dismount their bike and how to manoeuvre and ride a balance bike safely.
The little ones really enjoyed the fun sessions with their parents and grandparents and their balancing techniques improved significantly thanks to their training.
Once their confidence grows further it will make the progression to a pedal bike much easier.
The Active Travel Hub is based within Kilmarnock railway station’s community village. The Active Travel team can provide advice to local people and businesses on active travel and the health and environmental benefits of replacing the car by walking or cycling on short journeys.
